The X80 series, the sixth generation of the Mark II, was introduced in August 1988, a complete redesign of the previous X70 series. While maintaining the design concept of its predecessor, the exterior design evolved to be even more stylish, incorporating curved lines to match the trends of the time. From this generation onwards, all six-cylinder engine models featured DOHC 24-valve engines, and a new strut front suspension and double wishbone rear suspension were also adopted. Riding the wave of the booming bubble economy, the Mark II became such a hit that in 1990, its annual sales surpassed those of the Corolla, marking the first time it had ever reached the top spot.
