This model kit of the iconic Sputnik-1 from Red Iron Models is an entirely new mold! The Sputnik-1 was the world's first artificial satellite launched by the Soviet Union on October 4, 1957. Sputnik-1 was an aluminum sphere with a diameter of 58cm, a weight of 83.6kg, and was equipped with four antennas that were 2.4 meters long. Sputnik-1 was launched by the R-7 rocket from the Baikonur Space Station, and achieved an ellipitcal orbit with a perigee of about 950km, a perigree of about 230km, and an orbital inclination of 65 degrees in 96.2 minutes; it was equipped with two 20MHz antennas and two 40MHz antennas. Satellite temperature information was transmitted every 0.3 seconds. The battery capacity was about 3 weeks, but it continued to orbit even after the battery ran out 22 days after launch. Sputnik-1 disappeared after re-entry into the atmosphere in January 4, 1958, 92 days after its launch.
