The first-generation Silvia was initially unveiled as the "Datsun Coupe 1500" at the 1964 Tokyo Motor Show, with sales commencing in April 1965. Its beautiful long-nose, short-deck design features sharp body lines with straight edges, and its sculptural form, reminiscent of a gem cut, became known as "Crisp Cut."

The car also excelled in performance and, in conjunction with the opening of the third Keihin Expressway on December 18, 1965, was deployed to the Kanagawa Prefectural Police Traffic Mobile Unit. As Japan's first highway patrol car, it attracted significant attention and was featured in the media, playing a major role in ensuring the safety of the Third Keihin Expressway.
