    1994 was a turning point for the All Japan Touring Car Championship, due to the new technical regulations established by the FIA. Cars have to comply with the Touring Car (Class II) specification of the FIA appendix J, which only allows four door saloon cars with a minimum of four seats and which are at least 4.2 meters in length. The new rules, while basically similar to the old Group A regulations, permit additional freedoms, particularly with respect to engines, which may now come from another car in the manufacturer's range provided they are a maximum of two litres with no more than six cylinders.
