The BNR32 GT-R debuted in August 1989, at the height of Japan's bubble economy, as an additional model to the R32 Skyline, which had been released earlier as the "Super-Sensory Skyline." The lineage of the Skyline GT-R, which had been interrupted for 16 years since the Kenmeri GT-R, had returned.
The BNR32 was born to win in Group A racing, the pinnacle of domestic touring car racing at the time, the JTC All Japan Touring Car Championship, and its specially designed, powerful RB26DETT engine had its displacement determined according to Group A regulations.
The BNR32 Skyline GT-R achieved complete victory in every race it entered in the JTC All Japan Touring Car Championship, achieving a legendary 29 consecutive wins. After the appearance of the BNR32, the races became a GT-R one-make series, and the BNR32 reigned supreme on all stages, from the street to the circuit, becoming a historically significant car that rewrote automotive history.
