About Northwest Airlines Boeing 747-400:
Developed in 1965, and using technology derived from their large United States Air Force cargo aircraft, the Boeing 747 "Jumbo" jet opened up a new era in commercial aviation. The latest version is the 747-400, which externally appears almost the same as the first 747. The wingspan of the -400 is 6 feet wider, with winglets added to the tips. Increased weight is compensated for by new Pratt & Whitney PW4000, GE-CF6-80/C2 or Rolls Royce RB211-524 engines which produce 10% more thrust while burning less fuel. The -400 has 1.3 times the range of earlier 747's and a 6 CRT glass cockpit that does away with most of the analog instruments. Even though it looks very much like the early Boeing 747, under its skin was the latest in hi-tech composite material construction making it a completely new, 2nd generation 747 Jumbo jet.
