While the magnificent Saturn V Moon rocket is credited as being the most powerful machine ever created, NASA's long-serving Space Shuttle is credited as being the most complex machine ever built, with over 2.5 million parts.
Following up on the release of their amazing 1/144-scale Apollo 11/Saturn V Launch Vehicle, Bandai masterfully brings that complexity down to 1/144 scale in amazing detail with this surprise release of the Space Shuttle Endeavour.
Standing an impressive 39cm/15.5 inches tall (43.5cm/17.1 inches tall when mounted on the display base), this fantastic fully-finished replica is made of die-cast metal and plastic, and shows extraordinary levels of detail and accuracy thanks to Bandai's extensive use of the latest tech data and photo references. The intricate heat-resitant tile detail is there, plus all the NASA markings, accurately designed and beautifully applied.
The Orbiter, External Fuel Tank (ET), and Solid Rocket Boosters (SRB) can separate to depict the Endeavour in any of its mission configurations. The payload bay doors can be posed opened or closed, revealing even more incredible detail inside. The ISS (International Space Station) -use RMA (Remote Manipulator Arm) can be positioned to manipulate the MPLM (Multi Purpose Logistics Module), with clear display stands included to facilitate realistic posing.
Removable panels reveal flight deck and mid-deck details, as well as some internal rocket motor details. The landing gear can be shown extended or retracted, and the engine nozzles, elevons, body flap, and rudder/air brake assemblies are all movable.
In order to display the Endeavour with all the dignity it deserves, Bandai supplies a beautiful black base with brass nameplate and clear supports to hold the full STS (Space Transportation System) "Stack" (the Orbiter, ET, and SRB combination). A separate stand is also provided to display the Orbiter alone in flight, and can be placed on the main base together with the ET and SRBs. The base features two mounted LED spotlights for realistic illumination of the Stack. Another interesting feature of the base is the choice of surfaces provided: a clear plate to show the mirrored surface of the base, plus two "photo sheets", one showing the surface of the ocean and one showing Mt. Fuji, both as taken from orbit! The base includes an AC adaptor to power the LEDs, but as this is designed for Japan's 100v electrical system, you may need a power convertor to use it with your country's electrical system. It can also operate on 4 AA batteries.
With NASA's fleet of Space Shuttles slated for retirement in 2011 (the Endeavour's last flight was in May 2011, and the final Shuttle flight (Atlantis) was in July of 2011), Bandai's replica of the Endeavour is a very fitting tribute to the Shuttle's 30 years of service!
