1/144 JMSDF LCAC Type 1 Air Cushion Landing Craft
The LCAC-1 class Landing Craft Air Cushion is a hovercraft-type landing craft developed and operated by the United States.
From 1993 to 2000, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) acquired six units to be deployed aboard the Osumi-class transport ships.
The LCAC's hull is made of lightweight metal and features a full rubber skirt underneath. It is powered by four gas turbines: two lift fans for hovering and two for propulsion. Maneuvering is achieved via variable-pitch propellers and swiveling thrusters.
With a cargo capacity of approximately 50 tons, the LCAC can carry one 10-, 90-, or 74-series tank or up to four armored vehicles or large trucks.
Each craft is crewed by five members: a commanding officer, engineer, navigator, deck engineer, and loadmaster.
Originally treated as auxiliary craft aboard the Osumi-class, the LCACs were designated as self-defense ships in April 2004, named as "Air Cushion Craft Type 1," and assigned to the 1st Air Cushion Craft Squadron under the 1st Transport Division.
In July 2016, the 1st Transport Division was reassigned from the Escort Fleet to the Mine Warfare Force, and in October 2020, became part of the newly established Amphibious and Mine Warfare Tactical Support Unit.
