The German Wirbelwind ("Whirlwind") Flakpanzer anti-aircraft tank of WWII was designed to throw a lot of lead at low-flying attack aircraft and fighters while offering its crew a modicum of protection. Its four 20mm guns were mounted in a fully rotating open-topped turret with 16mm thick armored plates, a big improvement over the open-platform types fielded previously. The guns were capable of firing over 800 rounds per minute.
Tamiya adds to its ever-expanding lineup of excellent 1/48 kits with the Wirbelwind Flakpanzer. This kit uses the hull, chassis, and running gear of the previous Pzr IV kit, adding new turret and gun parts along with four outstanding new figures (three sitting in the turret, one standing and spotting aircraft). The lower hull and chassis is die-cast metal, the tracks are injection molded link-and-length with molded-in track sag, and the markings are for a single unknown division operating in France in 1945. A unique addition to any 1/48 armor collection!
