The Abukuma was one of the Nagara-class light cruisers, a type that was already obsolete by the beginning of WWII. The Abukuma served honorably, however, taking part in the attack on Pearl Harbor as a carrier escort ship, and seeing action in the Battle of the Aleutian Islands, where she also played a big role in evacuating forces from Kiska Island. She was sunk by US B-24 bombers during the Battle of Surigao Straight in October 1944.
Tamiya's new kit of the Abukuma depicts the ship as it appeared during the attack on Pearl Harbor. A waterline model. Includes a Type 94 E7K floatplane.
