Commissioned in 1960, the 4,500-ton displacement destroyer Charles F. Adams, the namesake of its class, participated in many operations, including the recovery of NASA's Mercury 8 and the blockade of Cuba that soon followed during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The Adams received upgrades throughout its service to keep up with changing threats, and was finally decommissioned in 1992.
