From the Tamiya description:
The Joint Strike Fighter program was launched by the U.S. Department of Defense in 1996, with the ambitious goal of developing a multirole aircraft which could succeed a variety of craft such as the U.S. Air Force F-16 and A-10, the Navy F/A-18 and the Marine Corps AV-8B short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft. The Lockheed Martin design, which was chosen in October 2001 over a competing Boeing plan, was eventually named the F-35 Lightning II and has three variants: the basic F-35A fighter, the F-35B STOVL variant; and the F-35C carrier fighter... ...Nine countries co-operated in the F-35's development, and the investment started to pay off with its maiden flight in December 2006. Air forces including those in the U.S., Italy and Japan have ordered the F-35A variant, with deployment expected to begin in 2017.
Parts come molded in gray and clear. Includes decals with three marking options. Kit contains parts for one model.
