The 48,360-ton displacement Royal Navy battlecruiser HMS Hood was commissioned on May 15, 1920, and although heavily armed and armored, was considered to be of such a flawed design and construction that there were serious thoughts of scrapping her even before she was commissioned. She met a quick and unfortunate end in the early years of WWII when she was sunk on May 24, 1941, during an engagement with the German battleship Bismarck and heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen. The Hood was accompanied in the engagement by the British battleship Prince of Wales, which escaped destruction. Of the Hood's crew of 1,418 men, only three survived the sinking. This Pit-Road/Trumpeter collaboration depicts the Hood as she appeared in 1931, 10 years before her violent demise in WWII. The all-new tooling features crisp detail throughout, and can be built as either a waterline or full-hull model. A nice drydock-style stand with nameplate is included for the full-hull version. The main turret guns are provided with movable cannon barrels or more accurate fixed barrels with canvas boots molded on. Includes two Fairey IIID scout seaplanes molded in clear styrene. Markings are provided for the Hood and the two aircraft.
